If you have a 5G iPod and like Alpine Blue by all means buy this head unit it has the nicest interface for the 5G iPod on the market. If you are considering ever upgrading to a newer iPod, or heaven forbid, you actually want your car stereo to match the red interior lights read on. I bought the Alpine iDA-X001 with the PAC SWI-JACK steering wheel remote adaptor. After installing the unit into my 2000 Pontiac TransAM I noticed the steering wheel controls only worked during the daytime. As I investigated the problem I determined that if the display on the Alpine iDA-X001 is set to red instead of blue, as soon as the radio dims the display, it stops responding to the remote. I contacted Crutchfield about the problem and after multiple phone calls with their helpful technical support department I was informed that yes both Alpine and PAC are aware of the problem however Alpine doesn’t see it as an issue. They consider it a problem with the remote interface and besides you can always just use blue. Thanks for the outstanding level of customer support on Alpine’s part! I look forward to the same stunning level of commitment to customer scarification when I upgrade my iPod to one of the newer versions and discover an issue. So just remember if you are crazy enough to actually think your car stereo should function in the same manor day or night this might not be the correct unit for you!!! On the other hand if you plan on being home before dark enjoy!!!!!
Excellent player, but you cannot rate (stars) the songs like a Ipod. The remote control must have to be included for this price.
Yeah, this should have been a great product. And it mostly works… 85% maybe. But you’d expect more from Alpine wouldn’t you. Specifics – no matter what you do, no matter how many times you change it, the system will set to “repeat all”. You can change the settings on your ipod and on your deck and the next time you use it, it’ll default back to “repeat all”. Why??? Second, the text is too big – you can’t read titles. And you can’t change the text size, no matter what they tell you. This just should have been tested more and should have been a better product.
I recently had my Pioneer AVIC-N2 Nav Unit in my car die on me. The LCD ribbon cable broke, this was however a recall item so Pioneer will fix it for free. Only problem with that is that I have to send the unit. So I have taken his opportunity to upgrade the unit since I wasn’t a hundred percent happy with the pioneer.
Anyway on to this new unit. I have been using an iPod as my music source in the car for years, it’s just easier than carrying around a bunch of cd’s and I can’t stand the radio. I was first attracted to this unit because it basically looks like an iPod in your dash. The unit displays all the info you need on the 2.2 high res TFT display. The unit displays all relevant song info as well as album art. The unit comes with a cable that you can run to pretty much anywhere, and you can plug in an iPod or a simple USB thumb drive. How about some Pro’s and Con’s.
PROS
+ Fully iPod compatible
+ 24 Bit DAC
+ Bluetooth phone connection
+ HD Radio Ready
+ XM and Sirius Satellite Ready
+ MP3 / AAC / WMA support
+ Great sound quality
CONS
- No in dash CD player; Can connect an external CD changer
- Center button isn’t “select” its “search” (not a huge deal, just something to get used to)
- Would like to see more things included vs. being expensive add on accessory. (bluetooth, Sat radio)
- Can only change buttons to 2 different colors
*Even though my pioneer had an in dash CD player, the unit had to have the NAV dvd in all the time so it was worthless anyway,
Overall I really like the unit. If you are looking for a good iPod integration unit for your car, check this unit out.
First off, if you absolutely NEED CDs (or god forbid – tapes), this is not the head unit for you.
If you actually are a member of the 21st century and you’ve realized the usefulness of a digital music player (iPod, Zune – haha, or iRiver, etc) and you like to have your jukebox with you at all times, this is your head unit.
I installed this myself in a 2008 FJ Cruiser. Installation was incredibly simple and took less than 30 minutes from start to finish.
Once I fired it up for the first time, I was shocked. This unit made my speakers sound like they were B&Ws, not the factory Toyota units. In fact, I was considering installing new speakers, but once I heard the OEM speakers with this unit, I decided they were absolutely not necessary. The sound is crisp, the bass strong, and the mids perfect.
I use this exclusively with a 5th gen iPod video 60GB (video iPods add another great feature – the unit will display all your artwork on the LCD display) and it is perfect. The navigation is intuitive and simple to use and functions much like you would expect an iPod interface to function. I am using the high-speed iPod connection cable and I find there is little to no lag between pressing a button ad the iPod reacting to the input.
So, if you’re a DMP junkie and you enjoy having your library with you on the road, this unit will not disappoint you.
