Are you looking for a car cassette CD player combo?
With combo I mean the CD player and cassette player both in the same in-dash unit. If you are, then you don’t really have many options.
You know, cassette and CD are both old generation of recording and playback technology. Cassette or widely known as compact cassette in our context was first introduced by Philips in Europe at 1963. This compact cassette or often referred as audio cassette, cassette tape, cassette, or simply tape as you see on the figure was gaining its popularity during the late 1970s as a popular alternative to the 12 inch vinyl LP.
While CD (also known as Compact Disc ) was commercially available since October 1982 and is still a standard physical medium storage for audio todays, it slowly get its place replaced by newer mediums like DVD and more reliable memory cards with bigger storage capacity.
Some people (probably you, reading this article) still have their collections in these two mediums and are looking for ways to keep them. They want a car cassette CD player that can play both medium in the same in-dash car head unit.
Fortunately, there are some vendors that supply this small segmen of demand with their products, though once again, it’s not many. The other alternative is to get a car cassette player with a CD changer unit which would go under the seat or in the boot. In addition, you can also use a cassette adapter to plug in to the head unit so you can play your digital audio files. The last one is optional.
You have many more options with any of this configuration type. In my personal experience, I don’t like to use cassette adapter since the pickup unit of the cassette adapter is usually poor and adding more noise to the reproduction system since there is a convertion from digital to analog format.
With a CD changer you’ll also be able to put the CDs together in a unit. Usually up to 10 CDs in a changer. This way, you won’t have trouble exchanging the discs while you are driving.
The best option is to copy the collection of tapes and CDs to MP3 format that can be put in memory cards so you can play it on many more devices. At least convert your tapes to CD.
