I’m thinking about opening up a car audio and truck accessories business. I’ve been doing some research but it’s very overwhelming. I would like for your tips and opinions.
My husband is really good and loves to install car audio and such. I’m good at financial part. We already have the shop and there are only two audio places in town that are extremely high priced. We priced what we can get our inventory for and it’s atleast 100 dollars less than what they are selling it for. I’m just open for all tips and opinions.

1) have you worked in that field?
2) Do you have enough other money that you need no income from this business for 3 – 5 years?
3) Do you have a way to start small?
4) Who and where is your competition?

So many open businesses in an area that they’re not an expert in.

Honestly, let’s look at it – car audio accessories – well, Sirius and XM are making headway, can you make money installing those systems? Truck Accessories, like Rhino liners? I think you need to buy a franchise.

I’m not trying to scare you, I just think if you don’t have a solid business plan, you’ll be part of the 95% of business that fail in year one.

My advice – go with a franchise if you don’t know what you’re doing, use their expertise, and once you learn it you can go out on your own.

You need a 12 volt power supply to do it.

A head unit is fairly simple, since it doesn’t use all too much power, the power supply it needs is fairly small. I’ve even powered some off a salvaged power brick that used to go to a cordless phone (you know those power cords, with the huge brick on the plug end?) As long as it gives 12 volts DC, and at least an amp or so (1000mA or more), it should be adequate for anything but full volume output.

An amplifier is more difficult though…. they suck down a lot of amps of power, and a 12 volt DC power supply big enough to provide that kind of juice, is going to be expensive. They’re out there…. but I’d really recommend just buying a home theater amplifier/receiver…. it’ll be cheaper.

But personally, I order 90% of my equipment online. If you have to go to a shop, I would look up Pipo and go to his.

Hi all,

I’m very poor, my 92 Ford Escort broke down and bought a 94 Chevy cavalier that didn’t come with a stereo, from the looks of it the radio was stolen because the wires were cut. I took the factory stereo from the Escort and tried putting it in the cavalier using the wiring schematics listed below. there are two Yellow wires so I’m not sure which is which, but I tried both and neither worked. Nothing in the stereo turns on, I thought at first it was a Theft Protection of some sort, but doesn’t it have to turn on to set the code? I’ve checked the Fuses and although there isn’t a separate one for the radio, it doesn’t look like any are blown, and I made sure to take the neg. off the battery.

Is switching out factory stereos even possible. and if so, what could I have done wrong?

this should be the cavalier wiring:

um im not 100 percent sure but it might because they r two different stock radios from to completly different cars..maybe one of your connections were tight, but if it wasn’t even turning on then obviously your not getting power. so try to mess around the the car radio battery wires a bit and see what happens, best of luck

I am planning to get this phone and i checked the wireless accessories page and there is no FM TUNER or device which i can connect to my car audio system. Does anyone have any idea what i can use to connect to my car audio system. I don’t think the headphones i get with the system are regular headphone that have the same outlet as like MP3 Players.

It’s hard to get excited about music phones—so many of them have turned out to be clunky duds that don’t even come close to unseating the iPod (even the Motorola iTunes phone for Cingular doesn’t do that). So I was a little jaded and skeptical when I got the Nokia 5300 Xpress Music to test out last week. Yes, the two-toned Mondrian-esque slider has been out since November in an unlocked version from Nokia since last Fall, but T-Mobile is now offering it for as little as $ 99, completely configured to work with that network’s features, including myFaves (which gives you anytime calling and texting privileges with up to five friends). The T-Mobile version also comes in Lilac/White or Black/White accents (the unlocked GSM version comes in Orange/White).
Sure, it’s weird that T-Mobile doesn’t have a bonafide music download store, but no matter since you can use Windows Media Player to transfer MP3 and WMA files (or the Nokia Music Manager to transfer non-iTunes-purchased AAC files). Now, that sounds great on paper, but the reality is that not all AAC or WMA files are created equal: Due, no doubt, to DRM, I was unable to play any of the WMA tunes I purchased off of the Verizon Music store for my PC (I guess the only phones they’ll work on is Verizon phones).

That said, I have plenty of MP3s that I’ve ripped from my own CD collection, and lately I’ve been buying a lot of stuff from TuneTribe and eMusic, which sell tunes in the non-DRM MP3 format. Those files transferred seamlessly using a USB cable and Windows Media Player. I was able to squeeze about five or six albums onto the measly on-board five megabytes of memory, but you can upgrade using an up to 1 gigabyte microSD card.

But here’s where the phone shines: The interface and music access is user-friendly, music controls (on the side and on the front of the phone) are surprisingly responsive, and the volume goes up to 11 (though you’ll need to use the included adapter to use any kick-ass music player headphones like the Ultimate Ears triple.fi buds I was using—I’d skip the tangle-prone white headphones included with the 5300).

It’s got a 1.3 megapixel camera and a comfortable keypad that you access by sliding the phone open. What’s handy is you can navigate around the phone (and control music) even when the phone is shut by using the four buttons and joypad on the front.

Overall, the 5300 is a sleek little package that is decent competition for most dedicated music players.

Fusion was started as a “Competition” quality brand years ago and makes some affordable but yet reliable subwoofers, I have a friend who runs a single Encounter 12″ in a sealed box powered by a 600watt Fusion amp in his Eclipse and it rattles my teeth pretty well. I have seen the Encounter Bass package offered in my local shop for around $ 200 with amplifier wiring, that is the 500watt package. I would say go for it if you are just starting out, it is a great product.

Hi Guys,

I have spend some amount on getting my car audio updated from a leading car accessories showroom in Trivandrum. They had put a blaupunkt velocity sub woofers and blaupunkt 4 way amp in my car, but I am not satisfied with the output. They have retained the front door speakers and the JBL oval rear speakers.

I told them about my dissatisfaction then and there, but they were giving lot of justification for that and actually got me confused. Could anyone please help me on this.

They have used the 4 way system but I dont hear anything from my front door speakers and when I try the fader and increase the Front it gives more volume on songs and when I increase the Rear in fader it gives only the subwoofer sounds and this is really irritating. Could anyone tell me what can be done to improve my car audio with the current setup? Or a place in Trivandrum or near by where I could get this done?

You need another amp dedicated to the sub woofer alone, they have your sub and rear speakers hooked up together , there is no way to control the volume of the subs alone, you need that ability in order to make it sound right…try getting some one else to help you or read on the internet how to do it your self…you could also try and attenuate the sound of the subs by using in line attenuators but this is very difficult to get it right.

well usually there are little businesses you can go and get subs/radio/amps/tint ect. but as for major company’s i would say best buy but try to find a car audio shop by you there better in my opinion.

ok well if you want the best sub i would get JL audio but it tends to be a little pricey but kicker is a good brand and alpine is alright. so you already have the box and amp?

Hi, I have a ’92 Nissan Maxima. The Bose system is complete and utter trash. I need to get a completely new system. But have no clue what I’m doing. Absolutely, you do not need to keep all the brands the same. Once awhile some moronic newb will say this, but there is absolutely NO basis behind it. All professional shops use different brands with installs most of the time.

(notice the newb who said exactly this right after me “castmoney”).

Ditch the whole bose system. You can start by getting a nice aftermarket cd player, like a pioneer or alpine, and all four speakers. Everything would likely need to be re-wired, as some of these bose systems were tough to re-do without running new wires.

Giving an estimate is tough. If you want one, go to your local trusted shop and see what they say. Beware cheap flea market equipment online. Most newbs make mistakes such as buying junk equipment, and stuff that doesnt work well together (IE getting four channel amps for subs, wrong impedances, etc.)
