After looking at several radio models I settled on the KD-R900. The sound is great even with stock speakers in my Tacoma. Functionally the bluetooth works pretty well, but suffers from the same voice quality issues as just about every other hands free that uses a remote mic. In other words, it works ok for a quick conversation, but don’t expect to jabber for extended periods without annoying the person on the other end. The display and number selection isn’t that easy and when it reads the cell phone address book it doesn’t put the contacts in alpha order. It appears to display them in the order they were originally entered in the phone.
It takes some practice to operate the controls effectively since the common functions are combined into a few controls. No hard presets is probably the biggest obstacle to operation, but then again it does give you 18 presets for each radio source which is nice. Setting the presets can be a little challenging at times because now and then it won’t accept the preset choice. There are a few other minor programming quirks also, but overall it’s acceptable. I would recommend spending some time getting it all setup before heading out on the open road so you don’t have to fiddle with it much when driving.
The USB works great with flash drives. Haven’t tried it with a USB hard drive yet, but I don’t anticipate any issues. Also have not tried it with an iPod.
The display could use bolder fonts with better contrast and will washout badly with bright sunlight even if the light isn’t hitting the display directly.
Some features don’t work quite as you would expect. When using satellite you have to manually select the information you want to view. It will not scroll the artist and song title in one shot. You have to select which you want to see manually. Not a big deal really, but it is one more thing to distract you if you find it important to know who you’re listening to.
Installation was easy, but I think this is more a function of the vehicle you are installing in than the radio itself. The one thing that could have made it easier would have been designing the unit so the external USB cable was separate and plugged in at the radio itself instead of hardwired and hanging out the back. This goes for the external mic pigtail also. It takes a little patience to route these along with plugging in other connections before sliding the unit into the dash. Two people would make this much easier and may be a necessity with some vehicles.
Bottom line is it’s a nice unit for the price with many features, but like most radios these days that pack in more and more features, it can become a huge distraction while driving because it’s hard to make all those features easily available in a small package. Not the radio’s fault, but something to keep in mind if you are thinking of purchasing this unit for a teenager’s vehicle (and we know where their heads are the vast majority of the time).

Bought this item a few weeks ago for $175 and had it installed in my convertible. Forget using bluetooth when the the top is down. lol. I didn’t expect it to work anyway.
If the volume is set to a reasonable level there are no problems in call quality and the seperate mic works far better than other products with the mic built into the face plate. If the volume is set too high, a feedback can be heard on the other side of the line making it difficult to hear you.
The look of the radio is great and the performance is very good.
The most impressive aspect is how my bluetooth enabled Nokia streams music to the radio effortlessly and the sound quality that it produces is wonderful. I wish that it displayed the name of the artist through this medium but if I want that I can hook up my iPod to the USB connection that is provided and it will display the artist and song title.
illumination variances are good to play with and I find it difficult to turn off the radio’s shop Demo function which changes the color randomly.
Remote is average and has to be pointed directly at the radio to work. Sometimes it doesn’t register the button pressed and when pressed again it double enters your choiuce making you skip the song or channel.
This radio definately does wht I bought it for and upgrades the enterior look of my car.
This radio originally listed for more than $250 and you can feel the qaulity when compared with cheaper brands
Equivelent specs in a different recognized brands cost way more and sometimes you do not get all the features that this radio provides or they are lacking in looks which the JVC definately has.
I will add the HD Radio tuner soon and then I will be set for a while.

I have owned the JVC KD-R900 for about 3 weeks. Overall I am very happy with the receiver. Makes my factory speakers sound very acceptable. Bluetooth works very well (people I talk to don’t know I am talking hands-free!) I gave it this low rating because of some software bugs. All of the issues have to do with the IPod interface. 1. The audio from my IPhone is turned off as soon as the bluetooth connects! If I leave the IPhone connected to the front USB port and then turn the car on, MP3 music from my IPhone will begin playing where it left off. BUT a minute or two later the sound goes off. The only way to continue playing music is to disconnect the IPhone and then reconnect. THIS HAPPENS 100% OF THE TIME. But if I wait 1 or 2 minutes and do not plug in the IPhone until the bluetooth has connected then it works properly. 2. When I disconnect the IPhone from the USB port, the radio just sits there with the message “NO FRONT USB DEVICE FOUND”. When you remove a CD, the unit is smart enough to change to a different input…why not when I remove the IPhone? 3. If you are on a bluetooth telephone conversation and you turn your car off the radio and bluetooth turns off! Other hands-free kits I have used will keep the blutooth alive until you disconnect. I wish JVC would do this. I am hoping JVC will come out with a new software load that will fix these problems. If they do, I will amend this review. Until then I would not recommend that anyone buys this unit!

If you are looking for a good radio and not expensive this is the one.
Regonized Ipod like “plug and play” and got a nice dimmer that you can change the color as you like.
The bluetooth works fine and you can synchronize more than one cellphone (not at same time, you may need to choose which one you want to sync). You need to be carefully with the bluetooth adapter cause it is so small and very easy to lost. I leave connected it all the time on front USB and i connect my iPOD on rear USB (buy another ipod cable if you won`t to plug in and off all the time – need a ipod cable to connect).
Came in nice box with a case for the front part and manual.
I am glad to buy it…good value!
