I just received this player and tested it at my car. There is no problem with the volume as some other reviewers mentioned! Of course, you should turn the volume on the player a little high (more than 1) to get a good sound. I also tried to reverse play the tape (converter) to see what happens. In that case, no sound was heared.
Regarding the beep sound, based on the instruction manual, if you hold “stop” button and then plug it in the power or put the batteries, the beep sound would be eliminated. However, note that you should put batteries in the player (before putting, press “stop” to cut the beep sound) to save your setting (like CD volume, the track it is playing, beep sound and …) on the player. So if you turn off your car, it doesn’t reset and you won’t have to adjust the setting again. I wish sometime the reviewers make their statement with knowledge to not mislead people.
After reading the many other reviews — the ones who were complaining about the beeping noise, apparently didn’t read the instructions. The sound can be disabled perminently by pressing the stop button when you put in the batteries or ac/dc adapter.
Second, the quiet noise problem can be easily adjusted by properly setting the volume from the walkman. If you are getting some type of static, its because your tape deck is crappy and getting interference.
Otherwise, the sound quality is what i expected from a $50 walkman (for those of you who are getting bad sound quality – it may be a headphone problem, go buy better ones) – the earphones that come with the set aren’t great, but I wasn’t expecting to use them anyways. I have a better pair of headphones.
The CD player itself may be good, but the accessories are not. I bought it because it had a car kit. Well, the cassette that goes into the tape deck made a crackling sound so that it sounded like I was listening to a scratchy old record instead of a CD. The instruction sheet actually mentioned that this could happen. If they know about this problem, why haven’t they tried to fix it?
It also played very low. I had to turn the volume up all the way just to get it to a decent listening level. And then there is the beeping problem mentioned in another review. It will make a very loud beep every time you change tracks. You can turn it off, but you have to remember to do it every time you plug it in. I can’t figure out why they would make it to do that in the first place. And even if there is a good reason, why not make it so you have to do something to turn that on if you want it instead of having to turn if off if you don’t – every single time you use it!
Oh, and the headphones it came with didn’t fit well either.
All in all, very disappointing. I returned it.
This CD player is simply magnificent. The headphones hurt but most people don’t use the headphones included with their CD player anyways. I suggest buying a Sony MDR-G52LP Headphones and Sony SRS-A27 Portable Speaker System as add-ons. The sound on this CD player is superb and the buttons are easy to find and press. The LCD screen is extremely easy to read and it’s compact shape let’s it fit into your pocket easily. Also the skip protection and bass rock! The car kit provided is just like any other. I’ve had no problems with it so far. As an added bonus there’s also an AC adapter and remote control for the car included with this set. I’m sure you won’t be able to find a CD player at this price with all these accesories better than this one
I cringed when I read many of the reviews on this site, because I really wanted to a CD player with car kit as a gift for my father, but even Sony’s product was poorly reviewed. Well, I’m glad I took my chances. Many of the comments about volume, etc. may be misguided. When my father first used this, he had the same problem. However, the troubleshooting guide that came with the product fixed the problem — if you reverse the direction of the tape inserted into the tape deck, volume is normal. So take note of that fact, and give this product a chance. It’s great.
