What is the feature called that causes the artist and song name to come up on a car radio?

Question:

I am looking to buy a new car radio/cd player and I want to have that.

I’ve heard it called “HD radio”, but I’ve also heard that is something else entirely.

I just want to make sure I know what I’m asking for.

Question:

How does it work when you have a car radio that has the display that shows the radio station’s call letters, their name, and then gives you the song’s title and the artist — sometimes even before the song starts. How in the world does this work?

I’ll be the first to admit I don’t understand complicated electronics.
